Grizzly Bear Team With Mike McDonald for B-Side
- Posted on Aug 31st 2009 4:30PM by Charley Rogulewski
NYC indie-art rockers Grizzly Bear are storing some pretty serious contacts in their cellphones these days. First, Jay-Z and Beyonce turn up at the four-piece's Brooklyn waterfront concert over the weekend, and when we say turn up we mean the couple actually headbanged to the music. Today finds former Steely Dan and Doobie Brothers band member Michael McDonald extending his gruff howl on 'Veckatimest''s most pop-friendly track. The classic rock veteran shows up on the B-side to the Bear's latest single, 'While You Wait for the Others,' with his own rendition of the song. Grizzly Bear still provide their trademark oooh-aaah harmonies on the McDonald version, but McDonald's deep voice surprisingly fits in well with the tune, giving potential to winning a top spot on our favorite covers of the year list, if we had one. Both the single and McDonald's cover are currently available via iTunes for a cheap combined total of $1.98. You can also purchase the 7" on the Grizzly Bear website, but it'll cost you more.

Hello
This is a great song. I can't stop listening to both versions. Michael should be recognized as one of the greatest vocalist of our time. He's great, because of his respect for and submission to the music. He has learned to make his voice an intricate part of the music and not the centerpiece. He had this with the Doob"s and has gotten this back in the last 12 or so years.

Mike McDonald was like a leech on the neck of the Doobie Bros. when he was there.
It seemed, after a short while, that it was Mike McDonald featuring the Doobie Bros.
Steely Dan was, at best, a good novelty band with some pop hits but too far on the fringe to be a headliner.
They had a hit or two I liked.
The entire time Mike McDonald was with the Doobie Bros. was like a musical wasteland.
yuk-mike mcdonald, steely dan, beyonce, jay z? I used to like this band until these losers showed up.
