Tenacious D Close Outside Lands With Stunt Doubles and the Devil

When the Beastie Boys were forced to cancel their scheduled Sunday night headlining slot at Outside Lands due to Adam Yauch being diagnosed with cancer, Tenacious D came to the rescue. After all, they are the "greatest band in the world," at least, according to them. And if their set failed to prove that point, at least it was comical. The band performed pre-rehearsed skits between songs, including bits where they brought out character-props such as a robot (for the song 'The Metal') and even utilized a Jack Black stunt double for a gag where he convinced the audience that he could do backflips and handstands. The crowd almost fell for it too, except that his bandmate Kyle Gass called him out on it by calling the stunt double back to the stage. Jack and Kyle then pretended to verbally fight and, well, you know where this is going: Kyle pretended to quit the band. But it just wasn't true -- Kyle didn't actually quit the band. It was just a skit to set up the songs 'Dude (I Totally Miss You)' and 'Kyle Quit the Band.' Tenacious D did get serious for one minute, when they gave a heartfelt shout-out to the Beastie Boys. "We want to send all of our love to the great Adam Yauch," said Black. "Get well soon."
As for Tenacious D's own health, it was briefly in danger when the devil himself -- or at least, someone dressed as the Halloween-style portrayal of him -- came onstage after Black proclaimed that they were no longer going to use him as the subject of so many of their songs. Black said that the band previously thought that the devil was a really funny thing to sing about but that they have since changed their ways and, in fact, are currently working on an album of Christian rock. As always with The D, the joke was on the audience. And it's a gag that the band has done plenty of times before. Nonetheless, Tenacious D and the devil did, indeed, stage a "rock off" right there in Golden Gate Park. Guess which "D" won?
