Alistair McErlaine, the longtime guitarist for Scottish rockers Texas, is reportedly fighting for his life after suffering a massive brain hemorrhage. McErlaine, 40, was rushed to a London hospital last Tuesday leaving his bandmates "in shock." Meanwhile, McErlaine's wife Shelly Poole -- of the mid-90s pop duo Alisha's Attic -- has been at his side ever since. "I am thinking of Ally and all of his family at this time. My thoughts are with them," the band's singer Sharleen Spiteri told Glasgow 's Daily Record. "Like everyone else, I am desperately hoping Ally will get well and pull through. It is a shock. He is a personal friend and all of us are wishing him well with all our hearts."
"We heard the news today. It is something we are still coming to terms with," a spokesman for the band told the paper Saturday. "Ally is a great lad and well liked by everyone. He has had a bad one. We are just hoping and praying that he can come back from this. Our thoughts are with his family. We have been told the next 48 hours are critical."
Formed by Spiteri and Johnny McElhone in 1986, McErlaine joined Texas in 1988. His guitar playing helped the band amass thirteen Top 10 UK. hits including 'Say What You Want,' 'Summer Son' and 'I Don't Want A Lover.'
Fellow Scot, Edwyn Collins -- who once fronted '80s favorites Orange Juice and is best known in the for the 1995 single 'A Girl Like You' -- survived two brain hemorrhages in 2005. When asked by the paper for his thoughts, Collins said, "It is a frightening illness. I hope he will be OK."
