Adam Duritz Produces 'Vulgar' Comedy With 'Super Troopers' Team

Having recently completed a tour with his band, Counting Crows vocalist Adam Duritz is now looking forward to some rest and relaxation. "I'm not doing jack for a while," he tells Spinner, "I'm gonna hang out in New York City. I'm gonna ride the subway."

The time off is well-deserved: On top of his rock career, Duritz has been moonlighting as a movie producer. His latest film project, 'Freeloaders,' is a collaboration with Broken Lizard, the comedy team best known for 'Super Troopers' and 'Beerfest.' In addition to the guys from Broken Lizard, the movie also includes Clifton Collins, Jr., Jane Seymour, Dave Foley, Olivia Munn and Duritz, who appears as himself.

Variety describes the film's plot as a group of people who resides at a rocker's home, but their sponging days are in jeopardy when the place is put up for sale. "We submitted it to Sundance a few days ago, so we'll see what happens," Duritz says. "Hopefully it'll be in Sundance in January. It's a really, really vulgar comedy."

Recently, Counting Crows appeared with fellow touring mates Augustana at the Feel Free concert in New York's Central Park to celebrate National Parks Week NYC. The event also promoted filmmaker Ken Burns' documentary 'The National Parks: America's Best Idea,' which began airing Sept. 27 on PBS. Duritz said that he was glad to be asked to participate in the concert, which also featured Alison Krauss and Union Station with Jerry Douglas, Gavin DeGraw, Carole King, Jose Feliciano and Peter, Paul and Mary members Peter Yarrow and Noel Paul Stookey, who paid tribute to the late Mary Travers.

"Ken is an old friend of mine," Duritz says. "I think his work in films is the most important work in films anyone is doing these days. They tell us about race and class and everything that makes America the melting pot of this country."

Asked if he had a favorite national park, the singer says, "I spent a lot of time in Yosemite growing up. I've never been to Yellowstone. I've been to Florida but there are no gigs in the Everglades."
