You might not think shoegaze and electro would make for such good bedfellows, but Toronto "psych-tronic" duo Madrid manage to happily marry both genres with their heady chill-out soundscapes.

After a long hiatus following their critically acclaimed 2004 debut, 'Warm Waters', bandmates Adam Perry and Duncan Christie regrouped to write and record their forthcoming sophomore effort, 'Original Message', on new Toronto indie electro label YYZ.

First single 'Reply to Everyone' is a promising taste of the new release, boasting shades of their obvious influences (Spiritualized, M83) without sounding derivative. Even at six minutes long, the track holds attention with its vast array of sounds and pristine production.

The song's slow-build opening gives way to a skittering beat and buzzy synths before Perry's voice kicks in, sounding like a vocal doppelganger for Junior Boys' Jeremy Greenspan with his languid, whispery tone. In fact, Junior Boys fans will find much to like in this track, as that band's sound serves as the closest comparison for Madrid's brand of chilly, retro-electro with a modern twist.

There's a patchwork-quilt effect to 'Reply to Everyone,' with many distinct parts sewn together into a cohesive whole, from the reverb-heavy guitars to the '80s-style synths. Instead of the usual frenetic big-beat rush that mars the climax of many a decent electro tune, Madrid's left-field approach to song structure sees them maintain an ebb and flow throughout before closing on an almost trance-like note.

Several notable remixers (including Vitaminsforyou and the Cansecos) have already stepped up to put their own spin on the track, and newfound fans may very well find themselves clicking 'reply all' to start spreading the word about their latest musical discovery.
