It's true that Phish will be the only band performing at Festival 8 -- they'll play eight times in just three days -- but one of those sets will be an entire album by another band. It's a Phish Halloween tradition, a way of dressing up in a "musical costume" in the spirit of the holiday. Past Phish Halloween "costumes" have included the Beatles ('The White Album'), the Who ('Quadrophenia'), the Talking Heads ('Remain in Light') and the Velvet Underground ('Loaded').

On the "trick" side of Halloween, Phish has been having fun with flash technology, playing to their fans' penchant for obsession by mischievously announcing the festival over the course of several months. Originally, Phish just told their fans to "save the date" (Oct. 30 - Nov. 1) without revealing anything about the location. Instead, Phish used a map of America and slowly eliminated states by various means. California , for example, was flown off the map via hot air balloons. But that state later returned when it was finally announced that the festival was going to be held in Indio, Calif., at the site of Coachella. It was an emotional roller coaster for certain unstable fans.

Now Phish has a new game. Since announcing Festival 8, Phish heads have been making blind attempts at guessing what album Phish will cover for Halloween. So the band is getting in on the act, via another flash exhibit on the website. All possible albums are hung in frames on a wall. One by one, the albums will get the axe (literally) until the last living album emerges victorious. The vast album list includes classics from bands ranging from Arcade Fire and MGMT to Led Zeppelin and Radiohead. So far, elimination rounds killed albums by Leonard Cohen, Tom Petty and Huey Lewis.

But if, by Phish rules, they were able to bring back California, who knows if the above three giants are really even "dead." After all, those three do have a way with comebacks. As does Phish, apparently.
