Bruce Springsteen Debuts New Song at New Jersey Gig

Bruce Springsteen commemorated the final concerts at Giants Stadium on Wednesday night by unveiling a brand new tune. He surprised fans by opening with 'Wrecking Ball,' his homage to the massive New Jersey venue that he's rocked on many occasions since the E Street Band first performed there during its 'Born to Run' Tour. The band's Oct. 9 gig will be the last concert at the stadium.

"Join us tonight to shut the old lady down," Springsteen said to the crowd as he strummed his guitar. He then opened the new song with the lines "I was raised out of steel here in the swamps of Jersey/some misty years ago." The three-hour show, which included all of the 'Born to Run' album and ended with 'Rosalita,' was the first of five to be held at the stadium. As previously reported, the band will perform the 'Born in the U.S.A.' and 'Darkness on the Edge of Town' albums in their entirety at some of the upcoming shows.

If that's not enough, fans will also be thrilled to learn Bruce was a surprise guest at a taping of Elvis Costello's TV show, 'Spectacle,' last week. Recorded at the Apollo Theater in New York, the Sundance Channel show will feature Costello and Springsteen performing together. Costello sang lead on the Springsteen's 'Point Blank' and 'Brilliant Disguise,' and the pair teamed up on Roy Orbison's 'Pretty Woman,' Springsteen's 'The Rising,' and a medley of their songs 'Radio Nowhere' and 'Radio Radio.' In the interview portion, Bruce talked about his life and his wife, Patti Scialfa, who regularly chats on the phone with Costello's wife, musician Diana Krall.

Springsteen also revealed that his oldest son doesn't care much for his dad's tunes, preferring the aggressive tones of Rage Against the Machine, Dropkick Murphys and Bad Religion. An airdate for the episode has yet to be announced. In the meantime, check out a partial clip of Springsteen performing 'Wrecking Ball,' courtesy of New Jersey's Star-Ledger, below.
