Sloan are offering you a guilt-free chance to download their music. The Halifax-raised, Toronto-based indie rock stalwarts recently announced that the Chris Murphy-sung 'Take It Upon Yourself' is available for free via their website. The piano- and handclap driven paean to sticking up for yourself is the first taste of an as-yet untitled 5 song EP. Band member Jay Ferguson told Spinner that the EP will be the first release from an online Sloan store set to 'open' on their website in a few weeks.
"The digital-only aspect was motivated by a couple of reasons: declining sales of physical CDs, and even more importantly, [having] the ability to release something so immediately instead of waiting for manufacturing and distribution," he said. "It's nice to free ourselves from that constriction.
"Having said that, we still may release albums in the traditional way in the future, but for now, this was a fun and satisfying way to release new material."
As for bassist Murphy, who broke his collarbone in a hit-and-run accident, Ferguson said he's recovering well. "He's getting a bit stronger. Hopefully well enough to play drums by the time we hit the road in November."
