"I'm Moto Boy from Sweden. I like to say obscene things and sing like a little boy," the Swede also known as Oskar Humlebo told the Pop Montreal crowd, recalling like-minded local Rufus Wainwright. In fact, The fey Swede's delivery, mastery of melody and crack wit matched that of the notoriously extroverted Wainwright and his voice, though a great deal higher, proved similarly stunning.
Appearing alone and armed only with his cherry red guitar, the Swedish crooner proceeded to serenade the audience with his Jeff Buckley-esque choir boy falsetto elegantly draped over delicate jazz chords.
Sandwiched between two rock acts, the songbird's set seemed eerily out of place at first, causing an uneasy opening which was amplified even further by the juxtaposition of his rock-star aesthetic -- leather jacket, heavy-metal guitar, slicked back hair, eyeliner -- and his chanteuse delivery. But the ethereal-voiced singer soon won over the crowd with his sexually disarming charm.
"If I sell 20,000 copies of my album in Canada, I'm going to come back and do a concert naked and with a hard-on," Humlebo promised to the apparent delight of several women in the audience. "I swear this to you."
Though a relatively unknown commodity outside Scandinavia, Humlebo's good-natured humour and talent posit a promising future on this side of the pond, assuming he can keep his clothes on. North American cops might not accept being Swedish as a good enough excuse.
