Most people change over the course of two decades, and the guys from the Bouncing Souls are no different. In their 20 years as a band, the New Jersey punk quartet has certainly come a long way in the maturity department, but the transition wasn't easy. "Being in a band, you're in an environment where you tend to not face your life on a certain level, to not grow up," frontman Greg Attonito tells Spinner. "We definitely had, for better or worse, an extended childhood where you're running around on tour, just flying by the seat of your pants with very minimal responsibilities."Their latest album, '20th Anniversary Series,' which is being released one track at time every month in 2009, shows much more maturity compared to their early hit, 'I Like Your Mom.' Attonito is taking on more serious subject matter, like the ills of today's society as heard in 'Gasoline.' "What's cool about that song is that it manages to be about our society in general but also a really personal statement too," Attonito says. "It's like an apathetic attitude or laziness that pervades through everyone and everything. It makes you create an isolated existence that's just complete misery. We're angry. We blame society, we blame our parents, we blame the news, but in the end, we have to figure out, sort it all out and realize that we have the power to make a great world and we have to take that responsibility completely."
But this grown-up outlook doesn't mean the band has abandoned writing up-tempo, fun songs. 'Badass,' the ninth track from '20th Anniversary,' is a two-and-a-half minute rocker that lists things that are, as the title suggests, badass, including beer, kung fu, snakes, swearing, etc. "One thing I'm learning as a punk rocker who's close to 40, is really growing up and doing it well means keeping that youthfulness in your adult life," Attonito says. "It'll be better for you, being responsible, running your band, having a family and just having fun with your work and your responsibilities as opposed to feeling they're burdensome."
The next '20th Anniversary Series' track, 'Big Eyes' will be released Nov. 1.
