Lucero Get 'Ridiculous' for First Music Video

In 10 years as a band, Lucero have never made a video. But, as the Memphis juke-joint rockers launch their major label debut, '1372 Overton Park,' the band is now playing with the big boys. Rather than hire a supermodel and a stylist though, the first video for the R&B-tinged record is a fan-made clip for the tears-in-my-beer ballad, 'Darken My Door.' The humorous and exceptionally well-made video depicts a straggly-haired puppet taking the role of singer Ben Nichols' bitter, heartbroken protagonist.

"I don't know where they got that puppet," Nichols tells Spinner. "But, yeah, he's just having a rough time. We all liked it because it took that cliché and made it ridiculous. Some folks have said I like that song so much and that video doesn't really fit. Man, it's not supposed to fit," the 35-year-old exclaims. "It's just for fun. It's supposed to be ridiculous."

The band chose this clip because it poked a little fun at, well, Lucero. "We sent an e-mail out saying 'help us make a video for our songs' and everybody wanted to film us sitting in a bar, drinking. We were like 'No, we are not going to be in them. You've got to do something.'"

It's certainly an economical way to make a video, so is the band being cheapskates? "There is no money involved and we are cheap bastards," jokes Nichols. He adds that it's likely the band will make a "real" video, though he doesn't like the idea of a stylist prettying them up. "God, that just sounds awful," he says. Surely, he wouldn't turn down the supermodel, though? "No," he replies without thinking twice. "I would not."
