Joe Pug has wooed such a following thanks to his grassroots marketing campaign that it seems he'd give fans the shirt off his back. While we don't know that for sure, we do know that if you e-mail the Chicago-based singer-songwriter, he'll send you a free sampler CD with a handwritten 'Thank You' note. It's a smart approach considering the addictive nature of his mellow neo-folk tunes, which have drawn comparisons to Bob Dylan. This past summer saw Pug and his guitar hit the road with Steve Earle and grace the stages of Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and the Newport Folk Festival. It's a major feat considering Pug did it without the help of a record label or even a full-length debut album. In this video, Pug shows Spinner how he worked his magic developing an extensive fanbase in today's unpredictable music scene. His motto is "Gotta give people a taste, and then you got 'em hooked." Confused? The video explains it all, but we are warning you the motto holds true -- you're gonna get hooked.
To hold fans over while he tours Europe in November with Earle, Pug unleashed the aptly-titled 'In the Meantime' EP, available as a free download via his official website. One can only write so many letters before the carpal tunnel kicks in.
