It might have been a chilly night, but it was toasty inside Schuba's Tavern in Chicago late Saturday when Portugal the Man finally took the stage. With a haze of smoke and a minimal lighting scheme, the band appeared shrouded in mystery as bursts of strobes and rainbow colored laser lights occasionally lit up the otherwise dark stage. Lead singer John Gourley had a unique style of performing sideways to the audience instead of being centered in front of the microphone. As the band railed through several psychedelic songs from their four albums -- including this year's 'The Satanic Satanist' -- they easily lost themselves in the music. One surprise came during the band's extended jam session on 'Church Mouth' when they transitioned into a couple of lines from Three Dog Night's 'One.' Near the end of the set, they included another impromptu cover, this time diverting into 'Weekend Wars' by MGMT then going back to their original song in progress. Since Portugal's influenced by '70s classic rock, the homages to old and new bands made a lot of sense.
Before Portugal headlined, fellow Portland-based group Hockey introduced their infectious dance-rock music from debut 'Mind Chaos.' After opening with the funky 'Work,' the set was immediately plagued with technical difficulties. Apparently the last time the quartet played Chicago the same problem occurred. Not only were there audio issues, but lead singer Benjamin Grubin mentioned he'd been sick all week. Despite Grubin's lack of verve, the band plowed through five songs including '3 AM Spanish,' the countrified 'Four Holy Photos' and 'Song Away.' "We're a real band when I'm not sick," stated Grubin. At least the illness didn't prevent the rest of the band and the audience from grooving along.
