Trent Reznor Returns to Twitter for 'Pretty Hate Machine' Anniversary

Trent ReznorAh, home, Tweet home. Trent Reznor broke his Twitter silence last night when the recently-wedded Nine Inch Nails mastermind acknowledged a major career milestone: the 20th anniversary of his debut disc, 'Pretty Hate Machine.'

"Happy birthday, old friend. Pretty Hate Machine turns 20," Reznor wrote in his first tweet since quitting Twitter back in July. Reznor's salutation to the disc that brought us 'Head Like a Hole' and other NIN staples earned 'Pretty Hate Machine' a spot on Twitter's trending topics overnight.

'PHM' dropped on Oct. 20, 1989 via the now-defunct TVT Records and sparked the rise of synth-goth thanks to tunes like 'Down in It,' 'Sin' and 'Terrible Lie.' Sadly, because Reznor doesn't own the rights to 'Pretty Hate Machine,' fans are unable to legally obtain the recording from digital retailers.

Prudential had originally won the auction of TVT's Nine Inch Nails recordings when it liquidated and Rykodisc leased the rights to reissue it in 2005. Plans for a Reznor-sanctioned Deluxe Edition, with alternate mixes and rarities, was supposedly discussed but the project never surfaced.
