Toronto indie rockers By Divine Right may not be a household name, but the group has included plenty of them over its ever-shifting 20-year lifespan, with members like Feist, Broken Social Scene's Brendan Canning and Holy F---'s Brian Borcherdt, who also performed on the Halifax Pop Explosion bill. Borcherdt also played roadie since his label Hand Drawn Dracula was hosting the showcase and will soon be releasing By Divine Right's long-awaited new album, 'Mutant Message.' Playing largely new material, the boisterous trio brought out catchy numbers such the Spanish-baiting 'Que Paso' which highlighted band leader José Miguel Contreras' knack for hook-laden songwriting set to a blistering rock attack.
The current lineup, also which features electronic musician Michael Milosh on lead guitar and David Joseph on drums, continues the brash glam-pop sound Contreras has been flirting with since the turn of the century, with the newer additions proving more than capable of turning the Canadian veteran's tunes into hard-hitting rock anthems.
Seemingly in good spirits, Contreras ended the set pointing out Joseph's rather raunchy apparel to introduce the band's closing number. "As you can see, the kid is sporting our next merch item called 'The Titty Shaker,'" Contreras said, referencing their young drummer's gold-lettered T-shirt, before ending the set with the groovy B-side of the same name.
