Folk Singer Taylor Mitchell Killed by Coyotes

A teenage folk singer was attacked and killed by two coyotes in a national park in eastern Canada.

Taylor Mitchell, 19, was attacked while she was hiking alone in Cape Breton Highlands Park, Nova Scotia, when she was attacked by two of the animals on Tuesday. She died of her wounds on Wednesday.

Nearby walkers heard her screams and alerted park rangers, who arrived on the scene and shot one of the animals. The other has yet to be found.

A police spokesperson said the two coyotes were "extremely aggressive" when rangers arrived on the scene.

"Coyotes are normally afraid of humans. This is a very irregular occurrence," Bridgit Leger, a spokeswoman for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, told Reuters news agency.

Mitchell was airlifted to hospital in Halifax but died there. Paul Maynard of Emergency Health Services said she had been admitted with multiple bite wounds on her body.

"Words can't begin to express the sadness and tragedy of losing such a sweet, compassionate, vibrant, and phenomenally talented young woman," Lisa Weitz, Mitchell's manager, said. "She just turned 19 two months ago, and was so excited about the future."

Mitchell's debut album 'For Your Consideration' had been recorded earlier this year and the artist had been on a tour of eastern Canada when the attack occurred.

"She was so young and talented -- her big dreams were a perfect match with her big, kind heart," said Michael Johnston, the album's producer.

Biologists said attacks by coyotes -- also known as prairie wolves -- were extremely rare because the animals were usually very wary of humans. The area of the park where the attack happened has now been blocked of as officials try to find out what caused the attack.

Please..!! Stop with the stupid "menstral cycle" theories. I camped for many years while on my period..Nope....nothing ate me !!!.. Nothing came sniffing around in the middle of the night..nothing stalked me as I walked old wood roads,,,OH! and there hasn`t been a case of rabies in Nova Scotia in over 15 or 20 years! I do believe it IS a remote trail...Chances are If you`re hiking alone..and you holler for help....IT WILL take somebody a bit of time to get to you.. they have to find out where you are! Jeesh! I can`t understand all this..NO Rabies! No Blood scent.. Not hunting humans Wrong place...wrong time.. That`s it!..Nature is nature...oh yeah....last time I checked I was an animal...so I have as much right anywhere..I may not have four legs and fur....but I do have the understanding that They can have me for lunch...as I can have them...If I were to go "Camping"...I would have to drive 25 Minutes to get to the stop sign!! I`ve had people say...You don`t live at the edge of the world,,,but you can certainly see from your place! I love the country...that`s it! I respect it..

I am from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and have read all your comments, the people from this Island are saddened by what happened to this young girl, in all years I have lived here, this has got to be the first time I have heard of these animals doing this, about her hiking alone, I feel so bad for her, all I can imagine is how terrified she must of been, I understand why she did go hiking, at this time of year, it is so beautiful around the Cabot Trail, the leaves are changing and to hike through these trails is not uncommon. They are well marked trails and in some sense you feel safe knowing that, I don't care that she was a folk singer, I care that a young life has been lost and a family is hurting so much due to this loss, and about the animals, it is sad, but they are wild animals and what ever happened, they must have felt threatened to attack so aggressive. So at this time, just pray for the family and friends of Taylor, no one will ever truly know what brought this attack on, but we all do know, if it were our family member we would not want to hear all this mean stuff being said. So to Taylor's family, my heart goes out to you all, my you get comfort, from all your beautiful memories of her....

It is tragic, it is somewhat naiive to hike alone, and it is somehow ridiculously irrelevant to attempt to link this death to hip hop culture and music. The coyotes were not musicians, and their violence was likely precipitated by human encroachment into natural space. As far as the seeming disparity of reportage between hip hop versus folk musicians, which seems to be what the intial responder may have been referring to,there is obviously more public interest in hip hop music and culture than that of folk music. The press does not dictate public interest, though one could argue that they play a part in influencing it alone with myriad other factors. It seems to me that what might be more significant in the horrorific death of this young woman, rather than an implicit (and what appears to be unrelated and illogical) parallel to hip hop music, is the lack of awareness people have about placing themselves in a wild environment without adequate protection and knowledge. Moreover, there is an absolute disregard for the fact that humans continue to assume wild spaces (wasn't this a national forest?) should be devoid of "wild animals" that react according to the situation as they perceive it--like "wild animals." It is indeed tragic that this bright star of folk music had to die so suddenly, so horridly; but it is equally tragic that she came to this end with a common "human" refusal of awareness that the natural environment must be respected with proper safety precautions when humans enter it. And that has nothing to do with hip hop music, the press, pop culture or anything close to it.

What kind of evil ignorant souls are Jason and Lillian? This is one of the reasons the world is becoming more and more dangerous when people with attitudes and thoughts like this actually exist.

Instead of arguing about what is right or wrong here, lets just pray for her and her family and know that God is now watching over her.
