Titus Andronicus Clash With Security at Halloween Gig

It seemed like such a simple gig: show up at a warehouse, play Weezer covers for a bunch of hipsters, collect a paycheck and go home. Such was not the case for New Jersey indie-rockers Titus Andronicus, who were booked to do such a thing at the Vice Magazine Halloween Party, held this past weekend in Brooklyn. In a lengthy blog post Andronicus frontman Patrick Stickles details his clash with security. But that was the least of his worries. Stickles, who was dressed as a "glam Ulysses S. Grant," was a bit disappointed in the land of disenchantment he found himself in, and before their set even started, found himself by the door seeing his lady friend off. A security guard told him that his U.S. flag -- a costume prop -- wasn't allowed in the venue and escorted him to the door. After they got outside, Stickles said, "He yelled, 'NOW LEAVE!' and, grabbing me around the torso, began forcing me towards the metal barricades. Growing frustrated at the effort it was taking to get a 140-pound man in tights to do what he wanted, this gentleman grabbed me around the throat and lifted me off the pavement, tossing me over the barricade and onto the sidewalk."
Stickles continues to postulate that the security guard was not exactly sympathetic to any sort of indie subculture that may or may not have been thriving at that certain spot, or was just in a mood for a fight. It was hard to tell.
"I figure that either, a) he saw his position of authority as a good opportunity to stomp queers like he used to with the other good old boys, or, b) this guy was a real American and seeing a degenerate hipster like me hoisting Old Glory was just so offensive a sight that he was driven into a blind rage, like any reasonable person would. Point is, I was now forcefully ejected and, indeed, physically assaulted, and unable to gain access to the event where I was expected to entertain the assembled masses."
In the end, Vice tried to play damage control and mentioned that they'd bring up lawsuits against the security company but he didn't seem too convinced. Let's hope their upcoming gigs go better.
