Joss Stone Says Lily Allen Is 'Not a Singer'

Joss StoneOh, it's on. Joss Stone -- who just dropped her fourth studio album 'Colour Me Free' -- is clearly ready for a fight, saying Lily Allen isn't really a singer and has an unrealistic outlook about filesharing.

"She is more of a personality than she is a singer," Stone told the UK Press Association. "[Lily] needs to sell records because she's not a singer, and that's not an offense to her because I think that she knows that too."

Stone herself says she is "making real music [and] people [will] come to the show" whereas for Allen "it's about the track, their personality and their celebrity." Ouch.

Meanwhile, Stone also shot holes in Allen's staunch stance against filesharing after the latter recently blogged, "Filesharing is a disaster ... as it's making it harder and harder for new acts to emerge."

"She's not going to win [the] fight," Stone snipped. "None of us will win that fight. So let's just accept it and see it as something that can be beautiful and might change music for the better. It might sort the weeds from the flowers."

"Who said that musicians have to be millionaires?" Stone asked, sidestepping the fact that her deal with EMI is worth a reported £7.5million. "Who made this a rule? We don't need that much money. We only need enough to make music, eat and go on tour."

How false is Josh Stone? very over-rated. I remember she went to America, two weeks later she had an accent, which made her sound as dumb as she looks!

You know I never had a lot of time for Joss Stone before but she makes sense here. Lily Allen is NOT a singer, she can hold a tune ok but no distinctive or beautiful voice, as for being an artist I don't think the music she has produced so far puts her in that category either. The file sharing opinion? I agree with Stone a 100% Musicians do not have to be millionaires, they just need to make a living, plus if they write their own songs they get royalties from any use of their music which is not to be sniffed at, not to mention the money made from touring. File sharing is not new, I remember copying tapes from my friends in my double tape hi-fi because I couldn't afford them. Nobody knew and nobody could do anything about it, the same thing is happening with file sharing except on a bigger scale and people can be found out unlike my copying tapes all those years ago. The music industry has made a lot of money over the years, so have some "artists" who let's be honest are nothing to write home about, it is time to give some power back to the little people. I, personnaly would never download an album I really like, I would always buy it as a matter of principle but to find out if an album is any good, I download it for free to listen to it. I would never download Lily's stuff, free or ortherwise because I don't like her music. She won't have made herself popular (was she ever popular though despite all the hype?) with her pathetic views on file sharing, look what happened to Metallica, a lot of fans turned against them and they were, are, a LOT bigger ( and more talented) than Miss Allen. Lily Allen has proved herself to be what I always though she was: a spoilt little rich girl.

Cornwall!!!! Get your facts right. She is from Devon. Might not make a difference to you but these two counties are as far apart as Lilly and Josh

As far as I am aware, Joss Stone is actually from a village close to where I live in Devon.

I don't think Joss Stone has the right to criticise other singers. She seems to do this a lot as I am always reading some sort of comment said by her in the papers, which doesn't make her a very likeable character. I don't think it's wise of her to burn too many UK bridges! I think she should worry about what she is doing and leave others to it as it is my opinion she has not been around long enough, nor is she talented enough to justify criticising other artists. Oh and the fake American accent is extremely annoying and pretentious.

Joss Stone is an impressionist, much like Amy Winehouse.
Doing impressions (albiet okay) of black American sixties soul singers.

Plus Stone lost any credibility and became a laughing stock when she produced that silly mid-atlantic accent after being in America for some months.

It amazes me why so many people with so little knowledge of an industry or subject are so eager to jump in and demonstrate what little knowledge they do have. Easy to be brave when you're bored and on your PC.

The fact that these ladies don't see eye to eye does not take away that both of them are singers/performers and creative artists. It takes a lot of time and skill to pen your own material and even more time to find someone to listen to it let alone the balls to record it then tour all the (initial) small venues touting it around. They're both young but have paid their dues.

If you don't like one (or both!) then just don't buy their stuff - simples! But don't be so quick to take sides or criticise them - their commitment and effort to try to carve out a career where it's very competitive and less than 1% of the available talent ever gets signed is admirable.

Yes, Lilly is more of a talker/presenter than a classicly trained singer but I still find that it's partly this that gives her a hook/individual style and makes her stand out and she has as much right to perform and release her material as any other artist.

I say well done to both for what they've even achieved to date for both being so young.
