On Halloween, just hours before Motion City Soundtrack played a sold-out hometown show in Minneapolis, frontman Justin Pierre was on his way to pick up a ghillie suit, camouflage gear worn by hunters. As the self-professed "34-year-old boy" goes rogue with his 'Dino Trail' tour of random solo acoustic dates, mostly dictated by fan requests via Twitter, the army greens seem appropriate."We're not doing any hunting on this tour. It's strictly for recreational purposes. You can hide anywhere and not be detected," Pierre boasts to Spinner. But, with no band, stripped down to him and an audience, there isn't anywhere to hide. "There's no barricades, no anything," he agrees. "I can't hide behind the band. This is a challenge. I usually run from challenges. Maybe it's a turning point in my life, doing the things that scare me."
Fans can suggest stops for Pierre's mystery tour, which has no set dates, at his Twitter page. "We started off with a few ideas, then we asked the kids," he says. "Like we're in Chicago one night, then Grand Rapids, Mich. the next, so what's something cool to do in between? The idea is to not have a plan."
Following what could be a hectic schedule -- "I don't imagine myself sleeping very much," says Pierre -- MCS has a fully organized band trek in December opening for Weezer, before their major label debut, 'My Dinosaur Life,' drops in January.
"I've been on this whole new thing of signing up for things without thinking them through," Pierre adds. "If I had really thought about this, I would never have done it because it really terrifies me. But that's the only way to ever get over fears and just live and experience. Just jump in and learn how to swim."
