Green Day's 'American Idiot' Musical Bound for Broadway

Billie Joe Armstrong of Green DayGreen Day's musical version of its 2004 landmark album 'American Idiot' will have a future on Broadway. Producers are planning to shift the critically-praised show, which has been playing in an extended world-premiere run in Berkeley, Calif., to New York, according to a casting notice made public Monday.

While there's no set date or theater for the show's Broadway debut, the production's spokesman Michael Hartman confirmed the news to Playbill on Monday. The announcement that Green Day's rock musical about the search for meaning in a chaotic world hardly comes as a shock to anyone already familiar with the success of the Michael Mayer-directed musical.

The casting notice for 'American Idiot,' which collects songs from the multi-platinum album as well as songs from Green Day's latest, '21st Century Breakdown, does not list a production schedule or timeline for the play. Mayer, a Tony Award winner for his work on 'Spring Awakening,' will continue to serve as director when the project shifts from the Berkeley Repertory Theater to its new home on Broadway.
