Hot on the heels of their Halloween festival, during which the band donned the "musical costume" of the Rolling Stones and covered 'Exile in Main Street' in its entirety, Phish have announced more holiday festivities: the band will return to the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Fla. for a four-night New Year's Run that will include a special three-set show on New Year's Eve. While Phish had a stint in the '90s as the de facto Madison Square Garden house band for New Year's, they began to favor Southern Florida in the 2000s, beginning with the largest "new millennium" concert in the world on December 31, 1999. Phish famously played one long eight-hour set from midnight until dawn on New Year's Day in an open field at the Big Cypress Indian Reservation in the Everglades along Florida's "Alligator Alley." The band has often claimed that night as being the pinnacle of their career.
Phish then returned for another New Year's Eve run -- one that looked more like what they've announced for this year -- at Miami's American Airlines Arena in 2003. These upcoming shows will be the band's first time back in Florida since then. Of course, to attentive fans who attended the recent Halloween spectacle in Indio, Calif., Festival 8, this announcement comes as little surprise: on playbills that the band distributed, there was a suspicious satirical advertisement promoting a New Year's Eve run by David Bowie and UB40 ("Together again! Live in concert!") at the same venue and on the same dates that Phish just announced.
It was a spoof on both Phish's song 'David Bowie,' which also mentions UB40, and on the nature of Halloween itself, as many had predicted that Phish's musical costume would actually be a Bowie album. One can always hope for next year. Talking of 2010, you can now cross your Phish friends off the invite list for your New Year's party -- they're going to Miami. Tickets go on sale via Ticketmaster on Nov. 21.
