Eels, 'Little Bird' -- Song Premiere
- Posted on Nov 11th 2009 10:30AM by Mark Oliver Everett
We get a lot of writing contributions from artists here at Spinner, but few are as unique as the ones from Mark Oliver Everett, aka E, from Eels. After sharing 10 facts about his beard with us, the always-interesting artist sent over this blurb -- written in the third person, no less -- to preview his new song, 'Little Bird.' Check it out below. After a four-year wait for the Eels' 'Hombre Lobo' album, the band returns with another new record just months later. The first taste from the new Eels album, 'Little Bird,' finds Eels leader Mark Oliver Everett, aka E, recording himself playing all the instruments in his Los Angeles basement studio.
We tried to get him to talk about the album, but he said the subject matter is so personal that he doesn't want to talk about it. So we'll have to let the music do the talking this time. Hear 'Little Bird' now before the new album, 'End Times,' comes out Jan. 19, 2010.

E is simply the best. I've been listening to his music for some years now and was lucky enough to see him live in Cambridge a few years ago. I don't know how he writes music that manages to be beautiful, sad, haunting and uplifting all at the same time. Thank you E.

Thank you for writing such beautiful music.
It touched my heart so much.
You people are pretty ridiculous. And some of you are a little pompous. It's Eels. Not The Eels. If you really like E and his music you'd discover that pretty fast. Maybe I'm just insane. I don't know... And I think "the CD" is Electo-Shock Blues but whatever. I will say Blinking Lights is way up there on my list. This is a nice turnaround from Hombre Lobo though. I'm glad it doesn't sound like Birds like one person seemed to assert. I would like the song if random people didn't just supposedly love that song. I feel like a lot of them don't even know what it's about, and probably haven't even listened to much more of E's stuff, if any. It's just one of the catchier songs and they want to seem indie or something... I don't know.. I'm sorry.
I think I'm just too personal.. I don't like the idea of anyone stealing E away from me so I at least have to pretend that no one likes Eels as much as me. I'm sorry if I offended anyone.
When I hear E´s songs, something allways moves inside me. I discovered E´s music about four years ago, when the leader of a dutch band The Nits, Henk Hofstede, said that he was a fan of E and The Eels. So I decided to get some of their records from a library and I was really impressed. There is a lot of similarity with the athmosphere you get, when you listen to the songs of E and The Nits. If you are intrested in this subject, a good way for presenting the Nits music is their "best of" -cd Nest.

It is sad, but hopeful. I don't think it sounds like Grace Kelly blues either. I think the Eels have a unique style, which overlaps in some songs making them sound similar, but it only takes a second into each song to recognise which song it is.
I love Mark Oliver Everett's music and am counting down the days, hours, minutes and seconds until the new album's release.
Thank you Mr E! Thank you for all these moments for life supports, only by listening to you. Cheer! Jo (France)
