When Gabby La La was on tour with Les Claypool and his Fancy Band a few years back, she had downtime during Lollapalooza so that Claypool could perform there with Primus. Rather than sticking backstage and schmoozing with her rock 'n' roll heroes, Gabby stumbled upon a performance by the Sippy Cups on the Kidzapalooza stage and had her mind blown by both the band and the stage. "It has been a long standing dream of mine to cross over into the children and family realm, and this stage seemed like a new goal for me," Gabby tells Spinner. She also decided that she had to land an opening slot with the Sippies. "But to no avail," she says. "I could not understand this. I thought we were cut from the same cloth, so I never gave up hope."
Maybe now she can let go of that dream. Instead of opening for the Sippy Cups, Gabby La La became an official member of the band last month. While she has yet to take the Kidapalooza stage in Chicago, she did perform with her own band at the Kids Zone stage during Michael Franti's annual Power to the Peaceful festival in San Francisco.
"I really felt like things were finally starting to develop in my quest for the family audience," says Gabby. "Next morning, I open up my e-mail and see a note from the Sippy Cups!" One of the Cups caught Gabby's Kids Zone set and invited her to audition. Of course, being the grown-up kid that she is, Gabby admits that she let her own imagination run wild during the audition. "I am way into watching 'American Idol' and when I was invited to audition I pretended to be on the show!" she says. She's being serious but then adds, jokingly, "I became a member of the Sippy Cups thanks to good karma and Paula Abdul!"
Yeah, cut from the same cloth, indeed.
