A red-faced and somewhat contrite Pete Doherty has apologised after singing a snippet of the old German national anthem with links to the country's Nazi past. The Babyshambles singer was forced to leave the stage at the On3 festival in Munich when fans booed him after he sang, "Deutschland, Deutschland uber alles".The phrase, which translates as "Germany, Germany above everything," came from the first verse of the German national anthem and hasn't been used since Germany reunified in 1990. The new version of the anthem now begins with the third verse, "Unity and justice and liberty for the German Fatherland."
A spokeperson for the singer said that Doherty "was unaware of the controversy surrounding the German National anthem and he deeply apologises if he has caused any offence.
"[He] wanted to celebrate his appearance in Munich by assimilating and integrating with the crowd, something he tries do wherever he goes.
"Peter himself is from Jewish descent and has fought against racism and fascism with numerous organisations including Love Music Hate Racism.
"This is a subject he feels very strongly about."
However, as displayed by the clip of the incident below, it may well have been Doherty's tuneless warblings and inept guitar meanderings that set the crowd off.
