Spiritualized's Jason Pierce Relives 1997 Once Again

History seems to have a habit of repeating itself. With this weekend's All Tomorrow's Parties set to relive the spirit of 1991 with performances from My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream and J Mascis amongst others, Spiritualized are set to go back to 1997 as they take their third album, 'Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating in Space,' on the road in the wake of its expanded re-release. And it seems that leader Jason Pierce has once again had to deny that the album was inspired by the break-up with his then-partner Kate Radley, who subsequently married the Verve's Richard Ashcroft.
Speaking music website the Quietus, Pierce dismissed suggestions of a relationship between suffering and songwriting saying, "It just became one of those things, didn't it? Sometimes even denying a story becomes a story. That becomes dull -- when people keep quoting the same thing however you answer it. It's a little bit like when 'Amazing Grace' got tagged as a garage record, and people still talk about it as a garage record when it's got 'Oh Baby,' 'Rated X,' 'Lay It Down Slow' and all these beautiful songs that have little to do with garage music. And I think that's the bit which becomes dull."
He continued, "You try and capture moments, you know? I've said all along that 'Broken Heart' was written before any break up. But you try and put these feelings down in a way that makes sense to people. Sometimes it's not even a words thing, sometimes it's just a musical thing. But...I end up just saying the same things.
"Writing 'I have a broken heart' after having a broken heart would be a pretty trite thing to do. It wasn't something that I would have dwelled upon. It negates it just to make it about one thing."
