Working-class Can-rockers the Arkells are known for the gut-punch intensity of their songbook. So boxing is a pretty perfect fit for the Hamilton, Ont. band's latest music video.
"We really enjoyed making this video for a number of reasons," lead singer Max Kerman tells Spinner. "It was the first time the band had been clean-shaven in over a year and It was great to dress up and have our hair in a '50s style."
The Springsteen-esque indie act -- which won best new artist at October's CASBY Awards -- took the old-school boxing theme so seriously that, Kerman says, "to research the roll of the 'bookie,' [keyboardist] Dan [Griffin] actually became one for a short period of time."
"We collectively cast [guitarist] Mike [DeAngelis] in the Joe Pesci roll because he to is a true-blood short Italian man," Kerman cracks, adding, "we also really enjoyed seeing [bassist] Nick [Dika] with his shirt off."
