Alexa Ray Joel Hospitalized Following Alleged Overdose

Billy Joel's daughter, singer-songwriter Alexa Ray Joel, was hospitalized in New York City Saturday afternoon after overdosing at her West Village apartment following a breakup with her boyfriend. Joel, 23, was taken to the hospital at 12:24 pm after her roommate called 911, saying the singer was "emotionally disturbed" and "having trouble breathing," the New York Times reports.

Joel, whose mother is former supermodel Christie Brinkley, was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital, where she is "stable and doctors are assessing her needs," Claire Mercuri, a rep for the singer and her father, said in a statement.

Joel had taken a large quantity of sleeping pills and "wanted to die," the New York Post reports, citing the 911 caller. But authorities have not said whether they think Joel took the pills on purpose or not.

The singer, who released her debut EP, 'Sketches,' in 2006, has reportedly been suffering the effects of her parents' recent high-profile divorces. Her father divorced from Katie Lee Joel this year and her mother from Peter Cook in 2008 in a very public battle over Cook's infidelities.

Joel's own parents were married for ten years, divorcing in 1994 when she was eight.

On her MySpace page, Joel has expressed frustration at the New York dating scene, writing in August, "Is anybody else finding it a difficult 'dating world' out there? I'm so terrible at dating -- I don't know if I'll ever get used to it!" In the post, she listed her mood as "forgotten," but later updated it to recognize her fans for their support.

Joel recently released a new single, 'Invisible,' and is one of several musicians scheduled to perform at the New York Stock Exchange's tree-lighting ceremony on Thursday, Dec. 10.
