Julian Lennon, 'Lucy' -- Video Premiere
- Posted on Dec 8th 2009 11:10AM by Steve Baltin
For the past decade, Julian Lennon has turned his attention away from music, concentrating on art and other interests. 'Lucy,' the upbeat sing-along pop gem he recorded with James Scott Cook, wasn't intended to be Lennon's comeback song. But Lennon, who was originally supposed to sing only background vocals on the track, simply had to do the song as a duet."It's like the stars aligned from out of nowhere on this one," Lennon tells Spinner. "It just felt like something I should do." It's hard to deny the fates that brought the two men together, both of whom had a Lucy in their lives who suffered from Lupus. For Scott, it's his 89-year-old grandmother, and for Lennon, it was childhood friend Lucy Vodden, who his father immortalized in pop music history on 'Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds.' Vodden died from the disease in September at the age of 46.
The video draws heavily on that history, with Lennon seen coloring with crayons -- Beatles fans will surely know that the song 'Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds' came from a drawing young Julian did of his friend -- and a young girl, presumably a Lucy, seen playing on a schoolyard with friends.
For Lennon, the song, which raises money for Lupus research, is a fitting tribute to his childhood friend. "After hearing of her passing, the least I could do was something in her honor and her name that would bring more awareness and light to the disease she died of," he says. "I knew nothing about it before Lucy, so I just felt it was an opportunity to do something not only in her memory, but also to try and help the cause at the same time." Check out the exclusive premiere of 'Lucy' below.

Thank you so much for helping this cause. The song is fantastic and heart-warming. Our Lupus group, The Sunshine Coast Akroswirls, can't wait to play this song at our July 1st Parade in Sechelt, B.C. on the lovely Sunshine Coast. Thanks a bunch and love you.

Julian, such a great song ...the vocals and music are super upbeat. Anyway, the troubled world today needs music to soothe the edges of everday life. Do us all a favor and get off your fanny and crank out a new album...it's your destiny....take advantage of it. You have more fans than you know.

December 25 2009 at 7:51 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyJulian Lennon has always been a favorite of mine! Now, more than ever!! I am 45 years old..was diagnosed with Lupus about 5 years ago. It is amazing to me that so little is known by the general public about a disease that affects SO MANY!! My thanks to Julian and James for their contribution...for caring enough to help us spread the word, and possibly rid the world of this elusive, devastating disease!!!
