Rage Against the Machine Challenge 'X Factor'

British music fans might finally have a genuine race for the Christmas number one slot this year. In an attempt to prevent this year's 'X Factor' winner going straight to the top slot, a Facebook campaign to send Rage Against The Machine's 1993 hit 'Killing in the Name Of' has so far swelled to over 450,000 members. The petition is calling on fans to download the politically charged song from Sunday evening once the last chart before Christmas has been declared. Assuming that the fans who have registered actually buy the Rage Against The Machine track, 'Killing in the Name Of' stands a very real chance of occupying the pole position.
Because of the groundswell of support, bookies have installed the track as the favourite to gain the Christmas number two slot, ahead of Susan Boyle, Robbie Williams, Lady GaGa and Leona Lewis.
Even the track does beat the X Factor, it remains unlikely that 'Killing in the Name Of' will receive any airplay in its original version. Containing the refrain, "Fuck you, I wont do what you tell me', the single caused controversy when Radio 1 Bruno Brookes accidentally played the song on his Top 40 rundown in 1993, thus generating a flood of complaints and guffaws of laughter from the band's fans.
Slade frontman Noddy Holder told Spinner he would strip if the band's song 'Merry Xmas Everybody' topped the charts at Christmas.

I'm the biggest RATM fan going and I'm totally up for this. Can Spinner get the name of the song right though!!!
'Killing in the Name'!!! There is no 'of' in the title.
We wouldn't want people downloading the wrong thing!
Hilarious, replying to your own post with different names.

xmas no1 YEA !!!!
I've heard your song Spanked and it's very funny. would be a great xmas no1. That D smith person is a f**king dick who can't take a joke.
Rock on buddy.
the point is who cares anyway, the number one at christmas is usually rubbish, sounds like this year wont be any different
December 09 2009 at 11:41 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI think that it would be very appropriate for this song to reach No.1 this Christmas...It would be a wakeup call to that prick Simon Cowell that he CANNOT tell the British public what music HE considers to be good,so THEY should be buying it!
The chorus line will be ringing in his quite-obviously tone-deaf ears for years to come should RATM actually manage to hit the top spot...it's ALL good!
What a load of crap!
The British Public vote on X Factor, Simon Cowell makes the programme possible before and after with his finace, wake up and smell the coffee!
Ok I'm as pissed of as the next person about X-factor always hogging Xmas no1, but what the hell does the RATM song have to do with christmas? Yes it's such a happy tune for the whole family to sing along to! NOT! And I speak as someone who DOES actually have it in my music colletion!
December 09 2009 at 11:25 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIT's not about the song having anything to do wih Xmas, it's about knocking Xfactor off, which will hopefully have a knock on effect so that musicians produce new material to rival it next year once it's proved that it can be toppled. Not only that but having a socially unacceptable song reach the top spot due to a public backlash against the X-factor will put pressure on the X-factor and ITV to not cause this battle again in the future and hopefully move the show to another part of the year, or god willing but unlikely) scrap it all together. It's a necessary evil to produce a greater good.
