In a move that goes way beyond any kind of post-modern thinking, singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding has scooped the Brit Awards Critics' Choice gong for being the act most likely to break through to a wider audience next year. The 22-year-old Hereford-born singer has raised her profile of late by touring the UK as support to Little Boots and her debut single, 'Starry Eyed,' was released in September. She was chosen by a panel of magazine, newspaper and website editors and record label chiefs.
"When I found out, I had a little squeal, I had a little cry and I had a little fall down," she said.
"I didn't believe it at first but now that it's sunk in I am delighted and utterly honoured to have been given this award. I couldn't be more happy and thankful to everyone right now."
She later Tweeted: "Er, I won a bloody Brit Award."
Goulding, who follows in the steps of previous winners Florence and the Machine and Adele, will perform at the Brit Awards nomination launch on Jan. 18 and will receive her award for having the potential to sell records at the main ceremony on Feb. 18.
Manchester dance outfit Delphic were runners up on the nominations shortlist and were followed by Marina and the Diamonds.
