Fresh off their coveted Polaris Prize win, Toronto's F---ed Up have decided to give back. The hardcore heavy-hitters have released a tongue-in-cheek cover of Band Aid's classic 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' to help combat the epidemic of missing and murdered native women in Canada. "It's hard to find a balance between the song being a fun, playful holiday classic and the reason we're putting it out [which is] to benefit organizations dealing with a deadly, serious issue," says frontman Damian "Pink Eyes" Abraham.
Funded from their $20,000 Polaris prize winnings, the track brings together the likes of Tegan and Sara, Andrew WK, Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig, GZA, Yo La Tengo and Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew.Since the '80s, there have been 520 reported cases of missing or murdered Aboriginal women, with half of these instances occurring since 2000. Many believe the true number to be significantly higher. That's the equivalent of over 18,000 women, if compared to the general population.
Now that's f---ed up.
'Do They Know It's Christmas?' is now available for 99-cent download on iTunes and is slated for release as a seven-inch single (featuring a surprise b-side) in Feb. 2010.
All proceeds will go to Justice for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (Montreal), DTES Power of Women Group (Vancouver) and Sisters in Spirit (Ottawa).
