Kaki King Debuts New Songs at New York Show

It's safe to say that not many artists would go on to perform a concert after experiencing a physical ailment. Singer-guitarist Kaki King, however, was the exception. On Saturday night at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, N.Y., she played her show despite recently suffering a ruptured eardrum. It was an experience that King described in somewhat graphic detail on her Twitter page and then told the audience at the beginning of her concert, "It's just bloody and disgusting!"To her credit, King soldiered on with drummer Jordan Perlson and instrumentalist Dan Brantigan accompanying her. The set list was a combination of instrumentals such as 'Until We Felt Red' that highlighted her guitar-playing while others showcased her talents as a vocalist and songwriter, including the punkish rocker 'Pull Me Out Alive,' from her last album 'Dreaming of Revenge.'
The performance was also an opportunity for King to break in new material as she is scheduled to release her upcoming album, 'Junior,' next year. One of the songs was an uptempo rocker called 'The Betrayer,' which was inspired by the spy-themed book 'Agent Zigzag.' Also in the show, the musician played an improvisational solo number while seated, which displayed her amazing tapping and finger-picking technique.
Despite her condition, King was in good humor as she bantered with the audience. During the show, she told the crowd of her involvement on an upcoming song with Miley Cyrus and Timbaland, which Spinner previously reported on earlier this year.
Before it was all over, she said, "I'm so ready to get in my pajamas with a whole bottle of Advil."
