Amy Farris' Death Ruled a Suicide

The death of Amy Farris, a violinist and singer/songwriter who had collaborated with musicians like Brian Wilson to former X frontwoman Exene Cervenka, has been ruled a suicide, according to the Los Angeles Times. Farris, 40, who died on Sept. 29, was a fixture in the roots-music scene, performing alongside country artist Ray Price and onetime Blasters frontman Dave Alvin. She had allegedly battled depression for years.

An in-demand session player and touring musician, Farris relocated from Austin, Texas to L.A. earlier in the decade with eyes on a solo career. She released her debut solo disc, 'Anyway,' produced by Alvin, via Yep Roc in 2004. Farris performed on the disc 'Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women,' which was released in May 2009.

In November, in support of a Santa Monica performance to pay tribute to Farris, Cervenka told the L.A. Times, "A beautiful light went out -- it's a horrible thing. There's a huge void in everybody's life right now ... It's devastating. She was really an important musician and an important singer. Everybody wanted to work with her."

"One of the reasons I put the [Guilty Women] together was to showcase people like Amy who are incredibly talented but don't necessarily get the recognition they should," Alvin said in the same article. "We're going to keep this thing going, but now, she's not going to be part of it. It's just sad... She could do it all. She was a great string arranger. She would multitrack the violin and viola and everything else and suddenly you've got the L.A. Philharmonic behind you. She was brilliant on that."

How sorry I am to have just recently heard about Amy, having just met her father after 56 years. Dave and I graduated High School together and then went on with our lives. Then we coincidently met and began to fill in the years. Hearing about Amy at this time and the tragedy of her death. She must have been a beautiful young woman playing her soul searching music for years and seeking some sort of comfort zone that life could offer but she never found......until her decision to end it. I am so sorry.

Treatment doesn't actually help. If someone really wants to die they will just do it! If one has no reason to live or doesn't want to face being old, who's going to stop them? Try to lock them up in a nuthouse for their feelings and you may only make them want to die more. Do you think stealing their shoelaces is going to help? Besides, just looking at this list of rock stars and musicians and not many are making it past 60. The average appears to be 58. Life in the fast lanes living high on life then I guess some of them want to snuff it out just as fast. There's really no way to respond to these matters without seeming offensive or crass. There's no sugar coating. Is it right or is it wrong?
Besides, life looks much worse for women over 40. Only the younger ones are VALUED. If you have had children and have no money, even worse. Look at who men shit all over! We all must be plastic Pamela Anderson to survive feeling LOVED over our 30's. Either we DICE or just roll up and DIE. Either way, we're wasted.

Amy touched the lives of my family many times while on tour in NYC with Kelly Willis. She was a wonderful, spirited and generous woman. She gave me at the end of one of those tours her laminate and it is very proudly displayed in our living room - a daily reminder of a beautiful, caring person. RIP Amy and God bless.

Amy suffered from clinical depression her whole life. Without consistent health care, she did the best she could to get by. In the past few years she was able to get some relief through electro-shock therapy, although she then suffered severe memory loss and other dislocations. Her death was something she had rehearsed many times and I know she had many near misses in the last months of her life... ironically, when she was finally breaking through with Dave and as a session player. I saw her backstage for the last time in early September and she told me that she had finally reached the end of the road. I knew I had seen her for the last time. For her part, I think that Amy had conquered many things in the last five years -- alcohol, anger, and ironically, even drugs. I feel that she lived a life of courage and finally was able to fight her disease and her suffering on her own terms. For those who think that depression is anything other than an involuntary, hellish disease, read the book entitled "The Noonday Demon."

My friend killed herself this year. I had to travel 500 miles to take care of her final wishes and empty her apt. I found out while cleaning out her apt. from the drugs I found that she was very sick and she must of been afraid of having no mate or family to take care of her as she got sicker. I don't begrudge her deciding to end her life, but it doesn't keep me from missing her every day. But I respect the choice she made.

They say suicide is a selfish act,an easy way out.
The question would be....is the person in there right mind when they take there own life.Such a tragic loss to those who knew her and those who performed with her.
There are so many questions that we will never know the answers to about Amy.Some that her family and close friends may not know, and now never will.
May God have mercy on her soul and open the gates and welcome her home.

depression is so painful- you feel like death is the only way to stop it. Doctors are such fools- they need a pill for everything. A depressed person needs love, with out conditions, they need to express there pain, and not be judged. Sometimes there are no answers

Imagine being severely burned over 90% of your body. Then, imagine that kind of pain 10x over. That is what true depression is, struggling to function in a world where expectations are unrealistic even for "fully functioning" people. Secure a backpack of 2,000 pounds on your back and you have an idea of what it is like to try to function with depression. Employers would be wise to recognize and reach out to help those who suffer, because it is often these depressed people who help companies succeed with incredible insight, keen intelligence, and wit. Depression does not equate to sad. It equates to torture.

As a person with a life long bipolar condition i sympathize with her and am sad that perhaps she didn't get the help that she needed. i lost my mother to suicide and for that reason i would never do that to my family as i know how a suicide affects the family left behind. but that's not to say that i am judging her. i am sorry that she resorted to that end.

The thing about suicide....if it works....it's permanent. May her Family and Friends find peace, May she also have a better afterlife.
