BBC Apologises for Rage Against the Machine Profanity
- Posted on Dec 17th 2009 7:48AM by Julian Marszalek
The BBC was forced to apologise after listeners of Radio 5 Live were treated to a full, unexpurgated version of Rage Against The Machine's Christmas Number 1 contender, 'Killing In The Name', complete with swearing. The band were performing the song in a live link-up with the US last Friday (Dec. 11) and let rip with the song's original format.
Shocked presenter Shelagh Fogerty was heard exclaiming, "Get rid of it!" as the band turned the air blue with the song's notorious coda.
Clearly upset, Fogerty said: "Sorry. We needed to get rid of that because that suddenly turned in to something we were not expecting."
She added, "Buy Joe's record instead."
Rage Against The Machine are now favourites to secure the Christmas Number 1 slot this weekend. Should they win, the band will prevent the 'X Factor' from securing its fifth consecutive Christmas Number 1. X Factor winner Joe McElderry's single was yesterday (Dec. 16) reportedly trailing the LA funk-metallers by 65,000 copies.
'Killing in the Name' prompted floods of complaints in 1992 when DJ Bruno Brookes inadvertently played the original version during the weekly chart rundown.
