Planet Sound, the much-loved music zine of Teletext, published for the last time on Monday (Dec.14). The page, which had been around since 1997, ceased to exist as part of the overall closure of Teletext in the UK, another victim of the internet.Since 2001, Planet Sound (named after the Pixies song 'Planet of Sound') was edited by journalist John Earls, who now writes for the News of the World. The page gave early demo reviews to the likes of the Twilight Sad, Maximo Park, Nine Black Alps and Calvin Harris.
The closure has met with much mourning among the rock community. Nicky Wire of the Manic Street Preachers aid he will miss "the feel of the remote control to give me information", while the Beautiful South's Paul Heaton said, "I refuse to accept that Teletext won't be with us anymore. I'm going to carry on pressing the text button on my TV, like a dog who can't understand that his owner's dead."
Planet Sound's final edition included a variety of musicians sharing their memories of Planet Sound and Teletext. Earls, meanwhile, is reported to be in the process of setting up his own record label.
