Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler has checked himself into rehab in order to come to terms with an addiction to prescription painkillers, it has been reported. The 61-year-old, last in rehab in 2008 to deal with pain from foot surgery, had become reliant on the drugs after 10 years of injuries sustained while performing. In August Tyler fell from the stage at a show in South Dakota, forcing the band to cancel the rest of their summer tour.
Tyler, who battled alcohol and drug addiction during Aerosmith's 70s and 80s heyday, said in a statement to Rolling Stone: "I am taking responsibility for the management of my pain."
His actress daughter Liv pronounced her father a "courageous man" for checking into rehab.
Meanwhile, Tyler has moved to quash rumours of a split from his band. In November guitarist Joe Perry reportedly said the frontman had left Aerosmith and they were seeking a new vocalist.
"I want to set the record straight and say that I have read reports of a rumoured two-year hiatus and want to be clear that this is completely false," said Tyler. "I will enthusiastically be writing, recording and performing with Aerosmith as soon as things are handled."
