Do you have big New Year's Eve plans? Are you going to ring the new decade with a concert or party? Well, come New Year's Day -- America's adopted National Hangover Day -- you'll be thinking those plans were a bad idea when the headache kicks in and you can barely make a fist. Jan 1, 2010 may find you on a couch -- or worse -- thinking, "Maybe I shouldn't have chased that bottle of champagne with half a bottle of Jameson." When you stumble to your medicine cabinet, there will no magic bottle labeled "Hangover-Rx," or at least not one that works. In that spirit, Spinner asked some musicians to dish their best hangover remedies, because at the end of the day, there is no true cure.
Alison Mosshart (The Kills, the Dead Weather): "It's usually play a show and then I feel fine because you sweat like crazy. I don't get hangovers too much, but when I do I drink Berocca. My doctor told me to take it everyday because it's basically the multi-vitamin in a drink. It's incredible. It doesn't make you feel better, but you know that it's good for you so mentally you're like, 'I needed all those vitamins, thank you.'"
B-52s' Keith Strickland: "Green Tea is about the best one I have used. Coconut water is really good too."
B-52s' Kate Pierson: "I don't believe in the hair of the dog. I think drinking a ton of water and getting a lot of sleep is the best remedy."
Chromeo's Dave 1: "I don't drink that much, but [bandmate P- Thugg] says you have to have another drink first thing in the morning because then you sort of fall back into the funkiness. Man, I hate having hangovers so I just don't drink too much."
Dan Auerbach (Black Keys, BlakRoc): "I go get Chinese food. Wonton soup -- that's pretty much my cure-all. That's like my snakeskin oil."
Jack Penate: "I went and got an intravenous vitamin thing where they pump vitamins into your body. I felt pretty terrible in the morning, I went and got it done and an hour later I was fine. I heard that that's what the Rolling Stones ask to have like everyday. They pump fruit intravenously. The weirdest thing is when they start pumping you, you start to smell something, you breathe and your breath smells of like vitamins and it's all in your body. You kind of smell like one of those vitamin shops. It's just in your mouth all day. It's crazy."
Low Anthem's Ben Knox Miller: "Whenever I drink too much, especially when it's beer or ale, the sugar wakes me up really early in the morning. No matter how much pain I'm in, I'll wake up -- it'll be like six o'clock, as soon as the sun comes up -- and go drink four bottles of water and take two Advil, then go back to bed for two more hours. Then when you wake up two hours later you feel, if anything, you feel just drunk. It really does work."
OK Go's Damian Kulash: "Obviously there's greasy food -- the slimy egg breakfast or fat-ass hamburger, those are always good. And then, this doesn't help people world-wide, but there is a place in New York City called the Liquiteria. They have this juice thing called a Royal Flush, add cucumber juice in it and it's a complete hangover cure. I don't know what the f--- they put in there. It tastes somewhere between tropical juice and celery juice, but it's so refreshing and delicious and it cures hangovers -- plus, like, four shots of espresso."
Passion Pit drummer Nate Donmoyer: "Kombucha, the mushroom tea. It's .5% alcohol so any physical withdrawl your having, it fixes that up. It's really high in antioxidants and probiotics and it just flushes you out. They're like $3 a bottle." Adds Passion Pit bassist Jeff Apruzzese, "We have it on our rider."
Sara Bareilles: "Lots of salty food does it for me. One of my favorite meals after a hangover is Top Ramen -- chicken or beef Top Ramen. Unfortunately, you are supposed to drink a lot of water, but water tastes so bad when you are hungover."
White Lies' Harry McVeigh: "Drink more and try to drink more as early as possible -- 'Hair of the Dog.' I cure my hangovers that way, but I usually wait till the evening. I don't start at 10 in the morning."
White Lies' Jack Lawrence-Brown: "I've never actually found a cure for the hangover. I don't think one actually exists."
