Green Day's 'American Idiot' Hits Broadway in March 2010
After a successful eight-week run at the Berkeley Repertory Theater in California, Green Day's 'American Idiot' musical will officially be taking the Broadway stage this year, producers of the musical announced Wednesday. "Experiencing 'American Idiot' onstage in Berkeley was incredible," Green Day's guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong said in a statement. "Michael Mayer was able to bring life to the characters of 'American Idiot,' and Tom Kitt's musical arrangements are breathtaking. We're so proud that the show is coming to Broadway!"
'American Idiot' will start its run at the St. James Theatre with preview performances on Mar. 24. The musical's official New York opening is on Apr. 20. The cast has yet to be officially announced. However, Tony Award winner and 'Spring Awakening' alum John Gallagher, Jr., who played the show's lead character Johnny, may be reprising the role on Broadway.
There's no information on tickets just yet, but Green Day fans are encouraged to sign up on the show's website in order to get up-to-the-minute information as it comes. During the show's sold-out stint on the West Coast, the cast got together in the studio to record a new version of the band's '21 Guns,' which premiered exclusively on Spinner in December.
