Check out, Rogue Wave fans: Spinner is proud to debut the artwork and tracklist for the Oakland indie rockers' anticipated fourth album, 'Permalight.' According to frontman Zach Rogue, the cover came from a painting by Los Angeles artist Becca Mann.
"It's very hard to find an image that captures the totality of a record, but this painting is what we wanted," he tells Spinner. "It has beautiful vibrant colors, it's kind of warped and it's a woman reaching, pulling herself out of water. It's pulling yourself out and moving on to the next thing."
That image and what it encapsulates is important to Rogue. "What I love is people who are always reaching for something. That's why the artwork is an image of a woman reaching something. I like the spirit of that," he says.
The new album was produced by Dennis Herring, who's worked with Elvis Costello, who Rogue got to sit next to Costello at a dinner party. There, the two had a conversation that summed up what Rogue is talking about.
"When I was sitting next to Elvis and hearing about his life and how he's done all this stuff, he has this wry sense of humor that downplays it -- 'Oh, I just did an opera with Sting,'" Rogue recalls. "It was very inspiring as we were making music."
Rogue says he appreciates that Costello is "always trying different stuff," the same creed he follows as a musician. "Like Lee Hazelwood says, 'You're only as good as your last song,'" Rogue says. "As a songwriter, I shoot for that."
