Lowery has since recanted her videotaped confession, insisting that her admission to killing the punk rock manager-turned-Manhattan real estate broker in her $3 million Fifth Avenue apartment is false. According to the Associated Press, Lowery allegedly lost control and fractured Stein's skull, after her boss insulted her, cursed at her and blew marijuana smoke in her face on Oct. 30, 2007.
"'Leave me alone. Leave me alone!'" Stein's former assistant recalled saying during the confession. Attorneys for Lowery have lost a bid to keep her statements from being used at the trial. If convicted, Lowery faces 25 years to life in prison.
Stein, 62, was active in the 1970s punk scene that gave rise to CBGB and ultimately co-managed the Ramones. At the time, she was married to Sire Records boss Seymour Stein, who signed the Ramones, later inking Talking Heads, the Smiths and Madonna. Stein would use her industry contacts to broker New York apartments for the Material Girl, Sting, Billy Joel and others.
Prosecutors say Lowery, who had mounting student loans, had access to Stein's bank account information and stole over $30,000 through a series of forged checks. Minutes after the murder, Lowery used Stein's ATM card to withdraw $800.
