Roy Orbison to Get Star on Hollywood Walk of Fame
- Posted on Jan 13th 2010 2:50PM by Mike Ayers
seems like this should have happened a long time ago, but on Jan. 29, rock 'n' roll icon Roy Orbison will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Orbison was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame back in 1987 and while most people think of the Walk of Fame as honoring stars of the silver screen, it's long honored recording musicians and broadcasters. Other notable musicians on the Walk include the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Dizzy Gillespie and Michael Jackson. Orbison also joins country artist Roy Acuff, whose songwriting firm Acuff-Rose briefly employed Orbison in the '50s.Aside from penning such pop classics as 'Oh, Pretty Woman' and 'Only the Lonely,' Orbison's career was influential for the four decades he was active. He toured with Johnny Cash and hung out with Elvis during the Sun Records heyday, found pop success with the song 'Running Scared' and resurfaced in the 1980s as a member of the Traveling Wilburys supergroup, where his trademark baritone joined George Harrison, Tom Petty and Bob Dylan.
On Dec. 6, 1988, Orbison died of a heat attack just as he was at the height of his resurgence. While his early career is certainly influential, he won Grammys for collaborations with k.d. Lang, his work with the Wilburys and for his last release, 'Mystery Girl.' Congrats, Roy!

Yet actors such as Brian Keith and Elizabeth Montgomery only recently got theirs (and people had to petition and raise money for Brian Keith to get his). It's about time.

By the way, this article did not mention the great Jeff Lynne (of ELO) another wilbury. Cheers
Pauly Shore has a star and Roy Orbison didn`t? Who decides the selections ????
January 17 2010 at 12:58 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySusan is correct. I know that 5k was the cost but that was many years ago, could be more now. There is criteria and it has never been an issue. Usually the record companies or the fan clubs or agents or the studios put up the money.

January 17 2010 at 12:36 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWith classic songs like "Crying" "Oh Pretty Woman" and "Only the Lonely" Roy should've been given this star a long, long time ago. Glad he finally got his star.
