MGMT have revealed that their much-anticipated new album is set for a Spring release, with Andrew VanWyngarden, one half of the duo, explaining that the follow up to 2008's 'Oracular Spectacular' will be "plaintive" and "darker". Titled 'Congratulations,' the band have admitted the album was at times a difficult task.
"It's mixed and mastered, and now we're just working on presenting it to the world." VanWyngarden told Spin magazine. "We spent all of last year working on it, and that's after a good long while touring behind the first record, so it's definitely nice to be done."
After a 2009 where the band were Grammy-nominated and supported Sir Paul McCartney, who is said to be a big MGMT fan, the new songs look set to be more thoughtful, and perhaps, less exuberant, the band have said.
"It's definitely going to shock people," said VanWyngarden. "We dropped any sort of irony that was on the first record and 'Congratulations' feels true to who we really are.
"It's very plaintive. In a weird way, it's like a soul record. That, and there's an instrumental song called 'Lady DaDa's nightmare'."
Vanwyngarden denies the song is about Lady GaGa, about whom he sid, "I like that she's getting more and more bizarre and spreading that to the mainstream."
