While the Grammy Awards are a high-stakes competition for top artists, the Watson Twins are pretty pumped for Jan. 31 show, too. The Los Angeles folk duo, best known for its 2006 collaboration with Jenny Lewis, got a slight nod when the 'True Blood' Season One Soundtrack, which features the Twins' cover of the Cure's 'Just Like Heaven,' scored a nomination, competing against the likes of the 'Twilight' and 'Cadillac Records' soundtracks. "It's not exactly like being nominated for a Grammy -- it's like being adjacent" Chandra Watson tells Spinner. "I don't think they'll invite us, but maybe we'll get to go to some afterparties. Or at least I hope."
Although those golden gramophone statuettes are an incentive, Chandra and her twin sister Leigh were even more pleased to be affiliated with a soundtrack that they think breaks the mold.
"Looking at other soundtracks that were nominated, they obviously feature great music and some really big-name artists. But the thing I love about being on this soundtrack is that there are many newer artists like us that are able to break through and now be nominated," Chandra says. Lesser-known artists like glam-rockers Cobra Verde and country crooner Jace Everett also found their way onto the 'True Blood' Soundtrack alongside alt-country stars Lucinda Williams and Ryan Adams.
According to Leigh Watson, the Twins got onto the hit HBO vampire drama in an odd way -- she received a mysterious phone call from a music supervisor involved with show who got her name and contact info at a bar. Regardless of the deal's origins, Leigh and her sister, who have a new album titled 'Talking to You, Talking to Me' out Feb. 9, view television spots as a great opportunity for emerging artists.
"Just for the sort of music we play, radio is less of an option these days," Leigh says. "TV is kind of like the new radio -- especially if it's the right scene -- and we've definitely reached new fans through 'True Blood.'"
The only downside to the Watson Twins' soundtrack gig is that the sisters don't actually watch TV. In fact, they've never even see the 'True Blood' scene in which their 'Just Like Heaven' cover is featured.
"We heard it's a really steamy bathtub scene, which is funny because the same song was also voted in Playboy as the make-out song of this summer," Leigh says. "I'm glad we have this song that's inspiring such steaminess!"
