New York's finest purveyors of Afro-beat, Vampire Weekend, have been booked for this year's Glastonbury Festival by co-organiser Emily Eavis via a Twitter account. The quartet had been playing a live session for BBC 6 Music's Lauren Laverne and were asked by the presenter whether or not they'd be up for playing the legendary festival.
The response from the band was fairly predictable. "Sure, yes," they replied. "Call us Emily. Come on!"
What happened next came as a surprise to everyone. Having heard their plea on the radio, Emily Eavis offered the band a slot on the festival's opening night via Lauren's Twitter account saying, "Yes, Friday 25th?!"
Front man Ezra Koenig recalled how special performing at Glastonbury in 2008 was for Vampire Weekend, saying,"Playing Glastonbury the first time I think was totally a high point for us. That was the first time we played a really huge festival and it was incredible."
Vampire Weekend's new album, 'Contra', entered the UK charts at Number 2 yesterday (Jan. 17) and was held from the top slot by Florence and the Machine's debut album, 'Lungs.'
The 2010 Glastonbury Festival will be held Jun. 25 - 27 at Worthy Farm in Somerset. So far, the only headliners confirmed are U2.
