A trans-Atlantic battle of the sisters is brewing after the Brit nominations on Monday night (Jan. 18), with Florence and the Machine and Lady Gaga both up for three awards each.Lady GaGa, who sold more singles in the UK in 2009 than any other artists, is nominated for best international female, breakthrough artist and album.
Florence and the Machine -- the vehicle for flame-haired singer Florence Welch -- are up for best British breakthrough, female and album.
Lily Allen, 2008 'X Factor' runners-up JLS and teenage pop siren Pixie Lott are also nominated for three awards each.
But artists to have been overlooked for awards, which are decided at a ceremony at London Earl's Court Arena on Feb. 16, include U2, Arctic Monkeys, Beyonce and 'Britain's Got Talent' star Susan Boyle.
Lily Allen has a chance to banish bad memories of the ceremony in 22007, when she was nominated for three awards but left empty-handed.
Critical darlings Animal Collective, meanwhile, are nominated for best international album – alongside the likes of jay-Z – and best international breakthrough.
The full list of nominees can be seen here.
