Neil Young to Be Conan O'Brien's Final 'Tonight Show' Musical Guest
- Posted on Jan 21st 2010 3:15PM by Mike Ayers
Alongside news today that Conan O'Brien's last show as host of 'The Tonight Show'' will be on Friday, the embattled talk show host has roped Neil Young to be featured as his last musical guest, the New York Times confirmed. We've been a longtime fan of O'Brien's musical choices, mainly because he has such good taste. In the past, he's let Modest Mouse steer the ship and managed to wrangle the White Stripes out of hiding for his final "Late Night' taping. This week, he helped Spoon usher in their new record 'Transference' and paired up Joss Stone with throwback soul singer Raphael Saadiq, but over the years, he's also clearly picked up a few things in terms of song licensing fees. One of the recurring Conan bits over the years has been to try out outlandish characters on the audience, but last night he instead tried out the most expensive character.
"Until NBC yanks off the air, we can do pretty much anything we want," he said. "And they have to pay for it." He then went on to unveil his new character, a Bugatti Veyron car dressed as a mouse. "As you can hear, the mouse's theme song is the original master recording of the Rolling Stones' classic 'Satisfaction.'"
His estimate of the sketch's cost? $1.5 million. Whether or not Mick and company -- or their lawyers -- will come after NBC remains to be seen, but in terms of enacting revenge towards a network that is struggling, we'd say this is pretty cold. And genius.

After more searching, I found an interesting article that at least partially answers my question at: thrasherswheat.org/jammin/lynyrd.htm

LS - the group who continues to dis Neil with their song dissing Neil's "Southern Man"? Am I the only one who noticed this? Have these two acts made their peace? Did they meet on the show? Somebody in the know please comment.

His type of humor is rude, crude and too theatical for that time spot. HBO would be a better home for him and his gang. Better yet, maybe the BBC has a show for him to host in the UK. Adios, Conan!

January 22 2010 at 6:01 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThere's nights I was glad to turn on the tv and see Conan on Late Night when my day hadn't gone well. He always would make me laugh with some of his crazy skits he had even though they sometimes were totally ridicously stupid! But I still laughed & it made me feel better. I was sad he moved from NY; but was glad he brought the Max Wineburg 7 with him.
I know he was trying to be more conserative with the new show; but he's Conan O'Brien and I think he bought some new blood to NBC with he's antics & all. Anyhow I hope he can get back on the air like you folks say maybe HBO, Fox or Comedy Central. I will miss him till he finds a new spot out in tv land. Good luck to all the staff too.
