The Who Disclose Super Bowl Plans
- Posted on Jan 25th 2010 9:32PM by Benjy Eisen
Following this past Sunday's playoff games, we now know that Super Bowl XLIV looks to be an exciting battle between the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts. We also now know what the Who will play during their halftime show. Guitarist Pete Townshend revealed to Billboard that the band will perform a specially-worked medley of their biggest anthems, compacting their hits into a power-punch intended to entertain football fans worldwide. In years past, Bruce Springsteen and Prince followed a similar format, resulting in both rave reviews and increased album sales. "A lot of the stuff that we do has that kind of celebratory vibe about it," Townshend tells Billboard. "We've always tried to make music that allows the audience to go a bit wild if they want to."
With sections of "Pinball Wizard," "Who Are You," "Baba O'Riley," and "Won't Get Fooled Again," all tapestried together, the crowd should indeed go "a bit wild" come halftime. Super Bowl XLIV takes place on Sunday, February 7 in Miami, Fla. and will be televised in the United States on CBS.

I think they should have three performers. First someone country, then someone "classic" then something upcoming. Really, do the announcers need time for commentary when there is only one game going on? I really think that the music industry has forgotton how to break new acts (well actually they killed the traditional outlets... forced record stores out of business, charge commercial radio the same amount of royalties for new music as the tried and true...The Super Bowl would be a great place to introduce a new trend.

Do you remember the concert for New York after the 911 attacks? The Who stole and owned that show. I rest my case. By fuckers :)

January 27 2010 at 12:09 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyLoved playing The Who on my guitar in bands in the 70's...I'm now a 55yr. old "geezer" that still plays! When I heard The Who was playing Super Bowl halftime, I immediately thought this may not be a good idea because of the loss of power and high range in Roger Daltry's voice...It'll either be great, or curtain call for The Who.

January 26 2010 at 11:52 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI saw the Who perform in 2006. I must say, it was an excellent performance. I then went to see them again in 2007 and it was just as excellent as when they played in Madison Square Garden. I must say... I'm looking forward to the Super Bowl! Oh ya, I can't stand rap... should be reclassified as crap.

Atleast with acts like The Who , & Paul McCartney ( who was the best halftime show ever). We get great music instead of crappy music & there is no fear of any wardrobe malfunctions. There are just so many talentless wonder out there, passing themseives off as music artists.
