What's That Song From the New 'Big Love' Opening Credits?

'Home,' by Engineers
The polygamists on 'Big Love' have received a makeover. The HBO series has revamped its opening credits for its fourth season, changing its theme song from the 1966 Beach Boys tune 'God Only Knows' to 'Home,' a 2004 single by London-based shoegazers Engineers. The soft yet ominous sound of 'Home' sets the tone for the dramatic series and moves away from the dark humor that Brian Wilson's faith-and-family-oriented classic provided in the first three seasons.
The series is the story of Bill Hendrickson, played by Bill Paxton, a fundamentalist Mormon in Utah who is trying to juggle three wives and nine children. The opening shot features the four main characters -- Hendrickson and his three wives (played by Jeanne Tripplehorn, Chloe Sevigny, and Ginnifer Goodwin) -- falling into an endless black hole. The falling effect gives the opening sequence an 'Alice in Wonderland' feel, with the characters desperately trying to cling to one another as they plunge into a world of confusion, heartache and jealousy. "The opening sequence of the show has a very atmospheric look to it, which our music suits," Engineers guitarist/bassist Mark Peters tells Spinner, "and it's interesting how it visually relates the lyrics to themes in the storyline."
'Home' is a beautiful match for the show's opening: The lulling sound of Simon Phipps' voice, along with moody drums and violins, fits the starkness of the scene perfectly. The lyrics "Home/Is this my home?" also further this sense of confusion and sadness, which are two major themes within 'Big Love.' Music is clearly an important element on the show, with David Byrne and Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh having served as composers on previous seasons. Says Peters, "It's an honor that those involved think it a worthy replacement of 'God Only Knows,' as that song has always been a huge influence on us."
Engineers released 'Three Fact Fader,' their second full length studio album, in July 2009, and their most recent single is 'What Pushed Us Together.' They will join the recently re-formed shoegaze outfit Chapterhouse for a special performance at the Scala in London on March 18th. In addition, Engineers' self-titled debut album, featuring 'Home,' will be rereleased later this year, according to Peters.
