Potent Quotables: Grammys Backlash

Sure, it's the biggest night in music. But while taking home a Grammy Award is for many artists the climax of their careers, for others those golden statues have seriously lost their luster. Face it, Grammy: These artists are just not that into you.

"We just came to relax. We just wanted to watch the show. I don't know what this [award] is. I don't think this means anything." --Eddie Vedder, biting the hand that awards him during Pearl Jam's acceptance speech in 1996 for Best Hard Rock Performance

"You think I give a damn about a Grammy?" --Eminem, as heard on 2000's 'The Real Slim Shady,' which went on to win Best Rap Solo Performance the following year

"I didn't think they gave the rightful respect to hip-hop. DMX had an incredible album in 1999. He didn't get a nomination. I was like, 'Nah, that's crazy.'" --Jay-Z, explaining in 2002 why he was a no-show, despite his numerous nominations and wins

"A 50-year-old white man shouldn't decide whether we are relevant or not." --Pete Wentz, writing online after Fall Out Boy were overlooked for an award in 2008 (they also lost Best New Artist to John Legend in 2006)

"Man, f--- the Grammys! I couldn't care less about the Grammy Awards." --50 Cent, who has never won a single award despite being nominated 13 times, venting his spleen in 2009

Trent Reznor"The Grammys = the old guard/old media propping up their puppets trying to convince the outside world (and each other) they're relevant." --Trent Reznor, whose group Nine Inch Nails have been nominated a dozen times and won twice in past years, sharing his opinion via Twitter on the night the 2010 awards ceremony aired

"The Grammys don't respect country." --Toby Keith, nominated for Best Male Country Vocal Performance in 2006, going public with his opinion in 2010

"This is the pattern of a dying industry ... [It's] probably why we can live in a society and vote people to offices where they don't belong ..." --The Dream, upset that his album 'Love vs. Money' was overlooked by the committee for 2010

"Does it really matter to us? No. Absolutely not." --Silversun Pickups frontman Brian Aubert, on the group's 2010 Best New Artist nomination

"I think [Amy Winehouse] has a great talent, but I don't agree with the Grammys giving her those nods." --Natalie Cole, a former substance abuser herself, disapproving of Winehouse's winning spree in 2008 amidst a "stupor of drugs"

"I don't think they acknowledge hip-hop for being the true art form that it is." --Fat Joe, irked to find out on the red carpet that the award for Best Rap Album of 1999, which was won by him and partner Big Pun, was to be given off-camera

I am so taken with the reviews and media hype about the ole, new whatever. The bottom line is the music the artist the energy. Man you people out there really warms my heart and from the sincerity. Most of you either angry, displease or jsutr plain people who need to get something off there chest like me.loll.
Its the freedom of speech. CALIFORNIA FLIGHT PROJECT.
Literally have taken us around the world. An now the USA is just getting wind or ear full of us over some 30 plus years ago, like something came back to haunt them , no,loll.
We weren't ready we were head strong kids and didn't know what the music business future would hold. One of our guitar players Tom Horner and possibly one of the greatest rhythm players I ever heard, He was awesome he pass, Larry Valley just quit or went away from the truth for some reason or another, Joe still plays . We waited because technology had burst on the seen in the late 70's clear to day. now . We can truly cannot masquerade our music if its real or not you public music enthusiast will tell if its not real than quit before the masses find out.

Whether its today punk, metal rock, glam, hip hop all music have an audience and media behind them. We choose FUNK and learn from the best in its genre and we develop or with time and still learning with technology and math.
But its all science behind us. We let the people decide and were extremely honored. I am felt that with time God willing if he approves of it what does it matter to you. We do use debase lyrical content and we felt in order to get our audience stay loyal who you are and not what they think you are. And we done that.
We started j pop soul back in the 80's with the first hit song. CALIFORNIA FLIGHT.
Our huge HIT~ single that went certified Gold Harvey Fuqua, was right! He said Europe will soak the song up, And they did and he was right on the money.

Thank you God for my first mentor Mr. Harvey Fuqua, the late great r n b soulster crooner said Jerry J they are not ready for you, you are so raw and rare and that Billy Wayne mys cousin tried his very best to get me to stay with Marvin Gaye, but I was so young married and inexperience we were just not ready!
Now were consider as A LOST FUNK MASTER BAND but were just plain home grown homies who knew that if we let God help us live will make our own audience and we have , Thanks to Pacific Coast Jazz, P P U, Universal Music Italy Strategic Publishing, Black Diamond Records I H P Media, Pretty Special Inc. Black Media Bay Area and a host of GREAT D J's this industry can not give enough credit too. We love you all and thank you all for the massive support of CALIFORNIA FLIGHT PROJECT MUSIC. An were just getting started. We Thank our Great God Jehovah for his loyal support and his wisdom from above to guide us through this crazy business and I mean crazy, loll, We love what we do write, produce, sale music to you our greatest fans on the earth over and the Universe.

Use what you have I heard them and understand why a act tghat waited that long is worthy of great honor.
Why? Its a rarity never or undaunted era unexplained. VINYL is HUGE why loyalist DJ world over have scaved the globe to find those rare pieces. Like California Flight Projec. Undaunted ? Now is there time to shine

They're apart of rare breed. R&B from back in the years.
California Flight Project with there increditable singer songwriter, kept his hand on the trottle all along and now he have launch possibly the greatest music story ever. Grammys 2008-09 and 2010-11.
Name me another act. We all at the academy thing is sureal and it is> We might see a new era burst on the seen and never ever repeat it again similar to the Beatles, Gorizilla , Stones, MJ, Prince, Arthea, Lizza, and the list is rare meaning this artis cannot not be dupicated. California Flight Project is right there.I like to know how PPU and Univeral Music Italy, Pacific Coast Jazz, get their paws on them . The industry brought this act in right on time. A rare breed in deed.

thats because punk even though new was never revised.I like all these new artists out doing the punk rock scene.classical good stuff.its left out.now that you comment on oldies.I have to say beach boys we're the beginning of what is now known as surf punk.classical music headbanging what do you get jerry lee lewis playing the piano.their is alot of good music left out.its just forgotten or misunderstood.Their we're alot of musicians who tried thats what important not that they failed but, they tried.a song has a different meaning too the artist than those who percieve it.

Why do u and other people on here make stupid comments like that? Yes a lot of people try and rap, but for fun. Only a few really have the skills to make it in a career. Could u create a rhyme just like that or could u rhyme all kinds of words together without slowing down? I don't think u could, cause fool it takes a lot of skill and pratice to become someone like a Method Man or Jay-Z. So until u do shut up please because you are starting to be really irritating to me.

Trent Reznor might be the smartest guy in the whole music industry. Watch as he starts a revolution on who controls the content (which should be the artists) and who music is distributed by control of the artist. The World is a changing. Hum, that should be a song?

Power to the music!!

I had hoped someone would get mad at the elder men they only showed a blurp of, who were awarded "LIFE ACHIEVEMENT" awards and were treated with so little value to even let them get up and recieve their...did I say LIFE TIME ACHEIVEMENT awards...yes..LIFE TIME... on stage as lesser relevant & deserving artist did. It's al about who sells the most....get the air time...All the great rock & rollers & so many great artist new & old gave homage to these men, grand father's of the blues as paving the way for them to play rock & roll, and them learning from their playing & music. Here we have history still alive in front of us and the Grammy's are so out of touch they couldn't even see this misjustice. Sad and embarassing.............

I only hope Hip Hop in later life do not tranform into an old guard in itself, thus creating the same entity they are now marking.

Jay Z poppin' off about Hip hop & DMX not getting there due. Look at some history. The Beatles (20 #1s) got 1 Grammy (for Sgt Pepper) ONE! I've seen Rap/hip hop/country/pop artist win 5-6-7-8 for one album! ELVIS won ONE grammy. For best gospel album. Come on, think what you will but this was the KING of Rock-n-roll. One win. Up until post Beatles, rock was shunned by the grammy's. So don't complain, the door has been knocked down.

THAT HOW AWARD SHOW'S ARE THE BEST SONG OR ALBUM DON'T GET THE NOMINATION THAT IT DESERVE BUT THERE ARE SOME THAT WIN AND SHOULDN'T HAVE. I HAVE ONE PROBLEM WITH ALL OF THIS HIP HOP IT GETTING OUT OF LINE THEY SHOULD ONLY HAVE ONE CATEGORIES SO THE LATINO MUSIC CAN BE SHOWN ON T.V.
