Pete Doherty Fined for Having Heroin in Court

Pete DohertyPete Doherty's punishment for his latest drug-related incident won't put him in jail. As Spinner previously reported, the Babyshambles frontman was arrested on Dec. 21, 2009, moments after being sentenced for reckless driving. A bag of heroin fell out of the Doherty's pocket as he was leaving the courtroom.

According to Reuters, Doherty has now been fined £750 ($1200) for the December offense, plus £85 (about $138) for court fees. He will also be going for drug treatment, which he will pay for himself.

While this isn't his first drug offense -- he has 21 in total -- Doherty's lawyer Bruce Clark told the British court that the singer felt "very stupid" for being caught with heroin that he didn't even know was in his pocket in the first place.

"He is a recovering heroin addict and has received some very sophisticated medical treatment," Clark said. "He had been an addict for some years and is a very well known, famous musician with a huge international reputation."

Aside from rehab, Doherty is supposedly using medical implants that fight the effect of heroin, which his lawyer claims is "working for him."

If the powers that be can NOT put paid to this total waste of space when he knowingly commits a crime things are far worse than i originaly thought. This is a total disgrace no wonder we are sinking fast with idiots like this in charge.

I think the offense happened in England. I doubt he would have gotten a slap on the wrist in the United States. If a bag of heroin fell out of your pocket in a courtroom in America you'd definitely be going to jail.They are more tolerant in the UK and choose rehab as opposed to jail time for drug offenses.

I have some real reservations about believing he didn't know he had heroin in his pocket??? Of couse, if I were to be in court, I'd probably wear a suit that had just come from the cleaners, not something I had worn while I was doing heroin.
