Pete Doherty Fined for Having Heroin in Court
Pete Doherty's punishment for his latest drug-related incident won't put him in jail. As Spinner previously reported, the Babyshambles frontman was arrested on Dec. 21, 2009, moments after being sentenced for reckless driving. A bag of heroin fell out of the Doherty's pocket as he was leaving the courtroom.According to Reuters, Doherty has now been fined £750 ($1200) for the December offense, plus £85 (about $138) for court fees. He will also be going for drug treatment, which he will pay for himself.
While this isn't his first drug offense -- he has 21 in total -- Doherty's lawyer Bruce Clark told the British court that the singer felt "very stupid" for being caught with heroin that he didn't even know was in his pocket in the first place.
"He is a recovering heroin addict and has received some very sophisticated medical treatment," Clark said. "He had been an addict for some years and is a very well known, famous musician with a huge international reputation."
Aside from rehab, Doherty is supposedly using medical implants that fight the effect of heroin, which his lawyer claims is "working for him."
